Frequently asked questions
Do BBQ Pods come with a warranty?
Absolutely. We pride ourselves in supplying the highest quality outdoor kitchen pod and therefore are backing it up with a 10 year warranty. This isn't a random purchase, it's an investment.
What access is required?
For delivery and installation, we’ll need a clear access path at least 1200 mm wide with a level surface. If access is restricted, a crane installation can be arranged at an additional cost.
What base is required?
Your BBQ POD should be installed on a flat, solid surface such as a 100 mm concrete slab or a properly treated timber frame. For best performance and longevity, avoid placing it directly on soil or uneven ground.
What plumbing and electrical do I need?
If your BBQ POD includes a sink or refrigerator, a standard 10-amp power outlet and basic water in-and-out plumbing will be required. If you’d prefer a hands-off experience, we can organise this for you through our trusted, licensed contractors.
Does the price include delivery and installation?
Yes it does, unless we need a crane to place into your backyard. Also, if travel more than 3 hours each way is required there will be a small travel cost.
How much does an outdoor kitchen pod cost in NZ?
BBQ Pods outdoor kitchen pods start from $27,000 incl. GST and installation for The Classic model, $34,000 for The Signature, and $37,000 for The Elite. Custom-built pods are also available and pricing depends on your chosen colours, appliances, and layout. All prices include delivery and professional installation anywhere within a 3-hour drive of Mount Maunganui. For locations further afield, a small travel cost may apply. We believe a BBQ Pod isn't just a purchase. It's a long-term investment in your home and lifestyle, backed by a 10-year warranty.
How long does installation take?
Your BBQ Pod can be fully installed in a single day. Before installation, our team will carry out a site check to confirm access, base requirements, and any plumbing or electrical needs. On installation day, we handle everything: delivery, positioning, and setup. If crane access is required due to restricted entry to your backyard, this can be arranged at an additional cost and may take slightly longer to coordinate. Most of our customers are enjoying their new outdoor kitchen the same evening we install it.
Do I need a building consent for an outdoor kitchen pod in NZ?
No building consent is required for a BBQ Pod in New Zealand. Because our pods are self-contained, freestanding structures that are not permanently fixed to your home, they fall outside the consent threshold under the Building Act 2004.
What base do I need for my BBQ Pod?
Your BBQ Pod should be installed on a flat, solid, level surface. The ideal base is a 100mm concrete slab or a properly constructed timber frame. It should not be placed directly on soil, grass, or uneven ground, as this can affect stability and drainage over time. If you don't have an existing slab, we can point you toward trusted local contractors who can prepare the site before installation. Base preparation is one of the most important steps. Get it right and your pod will look and perform perfectly for decades.
Can I customise the colour of my pod?
Yes, absolutely. All BBQ Pods can be custom ordered in your choice of colours to match your home's exterior, deck, or fencing. Whether you want a classic stainless finish, matte black, or a colour that blends seamlessly into your outdoor space, we work with you to get it right. Custom orders typically take longer than in-stock pods, so if you're working to a specific timeline, let us know early. During your consultation, we'll show you colour options and help you design a pod that looks like it was made for your backyard. Because it was.
Do you deliver outside of the Bay of Plenty?
Yes. We deliver and install BBQ Pods across the country of New Zealand, including Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Whangarei, Rotorua, Napier, Palmerston North, and Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown. For locations within a 3-hour drive of Mount Maunganui, delivery and installation are included in the listed price. For locations beyond that radius, a small travel fee applies and we'll confirm this with you upfront before you commit to anything. Contact us with your location and we'll give you a clear quote.
What is marine grade stainless steel and why does it matter?
Marine grade stainless steel (316-grade) is the highest quality stainless steel available for outdoor use. It contains molybdenum, which gives it superior resistance to corrosion, salt air, UV exposure, and harsh weather. These are the same properties that make it the material of choice for boats, coastal architecture, and commercial food equipment. For a BBQ Pod in New Zealand's coastal and variable climate, marine grade steel isn't just a nice feature. It's the right material. Lower-grade stainless steels can rust or corrode over time, especially near the coast. With a BBQ Pod, you get a kitchen that will look pristine for years. Dont trust the cheaper products.
How does a BBQ Pod compare to a custom-built outdoor kitchen?
A custom-built outdoor kitchen involves hiring a builder, sourcing materials, waiting weeks or months, and managing tradespeople on your property. It can be an excellent option but comes with unpredictable costs, timelines, and quality variations. A BBQ Pod is precision-engineered in a controlled environment, delivered as a finished product, and installed in a single day. You get a consistent, high quality result with a known price and a 10-year warranty. No surprises. For most NZ homeowners wanting a premium outdoor kitchen without the hassle of a building project, a BBQ Pod is the smarter choice.
Can I add a pizza oven or smoker to my BBQ Pod?
Yes. When you order a custom pod, you can discuss adding a pizza oven, smoker, or other appliance upgrades as part of your build. Some appliances can also be incorporated into our standard models depending on layout and space. Get in touch with our team to talk through what you'd like. We love helping customers build their dream outdoor kitchen and we'll tell you honestly what's possible within each pod design.
What warranty do BBQ Pods come with?
Every BBQ Pod comes with a 10-year warranty. This covers the structural integrity and materials of the pod itself. We stand behind the quality of our product completely. Marine grade stainless steel is built to last, and our warranty reflects that confidence. If you have any issues with your pod within the warranty period, contact us directly and we'll sort it out. We're a NZ-based business and we're not going anywhere.
How do I clean and maintain my outdoor kitchen pod?
BBQ Pods are designed to be low maintenance. For regular cleaning, a wipe down with warm soapy water and a soft cloth is all you need for the stainless steel surfaces. Avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh chemical cleaners, as these can dull the finish over time. For the BBQ grill, clean the grates after each use and give the inside a thorough clean every few months. The drinks fridge should be defrosted and cleaned periodically. If your pod is near the coast, a quick rinse with fresh water after heavy salt-air exposure will help keep the steel looking its best for longer.
Will my BBQ Pod handle New Zealand's coastal weather?
Yes. This is one of the core reasons we build with marine grade stainless steel. New Zealand's coastal environment is one of the most demanding on outdoor materials, with salt air, UV, humidity, and sudden weather changes all taking a toll. From the heat of the north to the snow of the south, Marine grade 316 stainless steel is specifically engineered to resist all of these conditions. Many outdoor kitchens built with lesser materials, such as timber, powder-coated steel, or lower-grade stainless, will show rust, warping, or fading within a few years in coastal areas. A BBQ Pod is built for it.
Can I see a BBQ Pod before I buy?
Yes. We have a showroom in Mount Maunganui (1/39 Aerodrome Road) where you can see our pods in person, by appointment. We strongly encourage anyone considering a pod to visit. It's a significant investment and seeing the build quality, scale, and finish in person makes a real difference. To book a showroom visit, call us on 022 390 2730 or email info@bbqpods.co.nz and we'll arrange a time that suits you.
What plumbing and electrical do I need?
For pods that include a sink and fridge (all of our models), you'll need a standard 10-amp power outlet and basic water in-and-out plumbing at the installation location. If you don't already have these in place in your outdoor area, don't worry. We can organise this through our network of trusted, licensed contractors as part of the installation process. We'll discuss this during your site consultation so there are no surprises on installation day.
How do I order a custom BBQ Pod?
Start by getting in touch. Call 022 390 2730 or email info@bbqpods.co.nz or fill out the order form online. We'll arrange a consultation (in-person at our showroom or by phone/video if you're outside the Bay of Plenty) to discuss your backyard, your vision, and your preferred appliances, colours, and layout. From there we'll provide a quote and once confirmed, begin your build. Custom pods have a lead time depending on current production schedules and we'll give you a clear timeline upfront. We also keep in-stock pods in the most ordered colours and configurations available for those who want a faster turnaround.
Are BBQ Pods available in the South Island?
Yes they are! We service the whole of the country. If you're in the South Island and interested in a BBQ Pod, get in touch.
What is included in the installation price?
The listed price for each BBQ Pod includes delivery to your site and full professional installation by our team. This covers positioning the pod and making sure everything is working before we leave. The only additions that may apply are: crane hire if your backyard access requires it, travel costs for locations more than 3 hours from Mount Maunganui, and any site preparation work such as laying a concrete slab, connecting services if not already in place.
How wide does my access need to be for delivery?
For standard delivery and installation, we need a clear access path at least 1,200mm (1.2 metres) wide and a reasonably level surface to manoeuvre the pod into position. If your access is narrower than this, for example a tight side gate or restricted driveway, crane installation can be arranged at an additional cost. Let us know your access situation during the consultation and we'll plan accordingly. We've installed pods in all kinds of backyards and we'll find a way to make it work.
Can a BBQ Pod add value to my home?
Yes. A high-quality outdoor kitchen is consistently one of the best performing home improvements for resale value in New Zealand, particularly in the current market where outdoor living and entertaining spaces are highly sought after. A BBQ Pod is a permanent, professional grade outdoor kitchen that buyers notice. Because it's freestanding and not structurally attached to the home, it can also potentially be taken with you if you sell, though many sellers choose to include it as a selling point. Either way, it adds real appeal to your property.
What size is each BBQ Pod?
The Classic measures 2690mm long x 1002mm wide x 2350mm high. The Signature measures 2210mm long x 1002mm wide x 2350mm high. The Elite measures 3820mm long x 1002mm wide x 2350mm high. Custom pods can be designed to different dimensions depending on your space and requirements. All pods have a depth of approximately 1 metre, making them suitable for most NZ backyards without taking up excessive space.
Do BBQ Pods come assembled or in flat-pack?
BBQ Pods arrive fully assembled and ready to install. There is no flat-pack, no self-assembly, and no building involved on your end. Our team handles everything from delivery to installation. This is one of the key advantages of a BBQ Pod over a custom built outdoor kitchen. You get a premium, finished product installed professionally in a single day.
Can I get finance for a BBQ Pod?
Yes we do! A BBQ Pod is a long-term home improvement backed by a 10-year warranty, so it's a sound investment to finance. Get in touch and we can discuss options. We want to make it as easy as possible for the right customers to get the outdoor kitchen they deserve.
What's the difference between The Classic, Signature, and Elite?
All three pods are built from the same marine grade stainless steel and come with the same core inclusions: BBQ grill, stainless steel sink and tap, bench top, LED lighting, and drinks fridge. The main differences are size and premium features. The Signature adds a 42-inch Smart TV, Bluetooth speaker system, and electric spice cabinet. The Elite is the largest pod and includes everything in the Signature plus an irrigated herb garden, a toolbox, and a 30-metre retractable garden hose. If you entertain regularly and want the ultimate outdoor kitchen setup, The Elite is the flagship choice.
How long does a custom pod order take?
Lead times for custom BBQ Pods vary depending on current production schedules, but typically range from 12 - 14 weeks from order confirmation to installation. We'll give you a specific timeline at the time of your order. If you need a pod sooner, we keep a limited number of in-stock pods available for faster delivery. Contact us to check current stock availability.
Why choose BBQ Pods over other outdoor kitchen companies in NZ?
The truth is, there are other companies selling inferior products at a cheaper price. A few things set us apart. First, our pods are fully self-contained and engineered as a complete product, not assembled on-site from separate components. Second, every pod is built from marine grade stainless steel, not powder-coated aluminium or lower-grade materials that compromise over time. Third, we include delivery and installation in our price, so what you see is what you pay. Fourth, we back every pod with a 10-year warranty. And fifth, we're a New Zealand-based business based in Mount Maunganui. We know the NZ climate, the NZ backyard, and the NZ entertainer better than anyone. We're not just selling a product. We're building the best outdoor kitchens in New Zealand.
